Project photos are a useful starting point when choosing a renovation contractor. They can show the types of spaces a company has worked on and give you ideas for your own project. To get more value from a portfolio, look beyond whether you like the finished style.

Start with projects that resemble your space. A commercial unit and a residence may have different layout and usage needs. Then look for the type of work you are planning, such as ceiling installation, partitions, painting or carpentry.

When you find a relevant project, use it to ask specific questions. Which parts of the work are similar to what you need? What materials could be considered for your space? Would the same layout idea work with your room dimensions? Photos can guide the conversation, but an assessment of your own site is still needed.
