Why Painting Preparation Matters as Much as the Colour

Choosing a paint colour is often the enjoyable part of a renovation. But the appearance of a painted wall also depends on the condition of the surface underneath it.

Before painting begins, check for visible cracks, uneven areas, peeling paint or marks that may need attention. Explain what you have noticed to your contractor and ask what surface preparation is included in the quotation. This helps you understand the work involved before comparing prices.

Colour also looks different depending on the room’s lighting. If possible, view samples in the space at different times of day. A colour that looks warm in a showroom may feel different under your own lights.

For a larger renovation, painting is usually one part of the overall plan. Discuss when it will take place in relation to ceiling installation, partitions and other works, so the sequence is clear.
