When planning storage, it helps to start with what you need to put away. Make a list of the items you use every day, what needs to stay within reach and what can be stored out of sight. Then measure the available space.

Freestanding furniture gives you more flexibility if you expect to rearrange the room. Built-in cabinets can be planned around a particular wall or corner and designed for the items you need to store. Neither option suits every space; the best choice depends on your layout and how you use the room.

If you are considering custom carpentry, think about door clearance, nearby power points and how the cabinet will sit beside other finishes. Share reference pictures with your contractor, but also explain what you like about them: the layout, the storage arrangement or the overall look.
